HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro Overview

Designed for the HP Z4, Z6, Z8, and Z8 Fury G5 Workstations, the Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro PCIe 4.0 x16 NVMe Carrier from HP is a full height PCIe card that supports up to four NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 2280 SSDs. The card connects to your host system using a PCIe 4.0 x16 interface and provides data transfers of up to 4 GB/s. Use one SSD as a boot device and the rest for data storage, or use them all for data storage. Also supported is software controlled RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 using Intel's VROC technology. Thanks to a built-in active cooling solution, any installed SSDs will not overheat and throttle to low performance levels.

Please note that HP Z Turbo PCIe 4x4 M.2 SSD Modules are sold separately.

Benefits of Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro
  • Supports up to four PCIe M.2 SSD modules (NVMe) in one card, with a total storage capacity of up to 16TB. A PCIe Gen4 x16 or PCIe Gen5 x16 slot is required.
  • The active cooling solution ensures that the M.2 SSD modules will not throttle to low performance levels due to overheating.
  • Support for single and double sided PCIe M.2 SSDs, up to 80mm in length.
  • One of the M.2 SSD modules on the card may be used as a boot device, and the other modules may be used for data storage. Alternatively, all of the M.2 SSD modules may be used for data storage.
  • Additional storage devices, such as SATA hard drives and SSDs, may be used in combination with the HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro.
  • Multiple HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro cards can be installed into HP Z Workstations. A card with three or four M.2 SSD modules requires a PCIe Gen4 x16 slot.
Compatibility
The HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro is supported on the HP Z4, Z6, Z8, and Z8 Fury G5 Workstations. It will support storage configurations as a boot device and as a data device. It also can be configured with other storage components including SATA and SAS drives and controllers. Not all configurations are available from the factory.
Recommended Slot Order
For all HP Workstation platforms, the tested and approved slots for the HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro are as follows (in order of preference):

  • Z4 G5: Slot #4 or #5
  • Z6 G5: Slot #4 or #5
  • Z8 G5: Slot #1, #2 (required 2nd CPU), and #6 (requires 2nd CPU)
  • Z8 Fury G5: Slot #7, #5, or #1
RAID Support
The HP Z Turbo Drive Dual Pro Carrier can support various RAID configurations via software RAID. Being managed by software RAID does present some differences and restrictions when compared to hardware RAID. On the Z8 Fury G5, Z8 G5, Z6 G5, and Z4 G5, both bootable and data RAID support can be configured via VROC. VROC is an Intel technology that allows NVMe devices to be configured and included in RAID arrays.

There are two versions of VROC available to customers:

  • Standard: This version enables RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10. RAID volumes are bootable as long as the configured devices are all on the same VMD domain (configured with the Intel VROC software).
  • Premium: This version enables all RAID levels available in the Standard version and adds RAID 5.
